🎣 Know When to Fish or Cut Bait in Sales

In sales, one of the hardest lessons to learn is that you can’t always win the business. Sometimes, no matter how strong your pitch or how hard you try, circumstances are beyond your control. The key is knowing when to keep pushing and when to cut bait and move on—while still leaving the door open for future opportunities.

I learned this lesson early in my career. On a sales call, I walked into a construction trailer and was immediately met by the site superintendent. Before I could say a word, he told me:

“Before you start your pitch, I want to tell you that your competitor’s sales rep was the best man in my wedding.”

At that moment, I knew I wasn’t going to win that account. Instead of wasting time, I shifted strategies. I thanked him for his honesty, told him I wouldn’t keep coming back unnecessarily, and left my card with a simple message:

“If your best man ever leaves the business, or if there’s something he can’t provide, give me a call.”

The superintendent looked at me and said: “You’re a smart man.” He explained that every other sales rep he’d told the same thing to still asked for the business—“What do I have to do to get the order?”—and every time he thought, “Be my best man in my wedding.”

Weeks later, the phone rang. He needed a piece of equipment his best man’s company didn’t carry. I got the order.

Lessons Learned:

  • 🎯 Listen carefully. Customers often tell you exactly where you stand.
  • 🔄 Adapt quickly. Shift your strategy to match reality instead of forcing a close.
  • ⏳ Value your time. Don’t waste energy chasing a lost cause—use it to position yourself for future wins.

Sometimes the smartest move in sales isn’t pressing harder, but stepping back and setting yourself up for the opportunity that comes when the tide changes.
